1. Agree upon a price for the car
2. Get a financing quote from the dealer
3. Contact local banks for a car loan quote
4. Go online to find a quote. Sometimes it can be cheaper.

Don't be distracted by the payment. Longer loans will have a lower payment, but don't necessarily represent a better deal. Allow the negotiated price to be the price for the car, not the payment.
